Knowing whether your hair leans 4A, 4B, or 4C gives you a starting point when choosing extensions—but pattern alone doesn’t tell the whole story. Density, strand feel, shrinkage, volume, and how your hair naturally behaves are just as important when creating a believable blend.
4A — DEFINED + COILED
4A hair typically forms small, defined coils with visible pattern and natural spring. The curl formation is usually easy to identify, even as the hair experiences shrinkage.
Think: Defined • Coiled • Springy • Dimensional
If your hair is 4A, consider both coil size and fullness when selecting extensions. Similar-looking coils can produce very different results depending on density and strand feel.
4B — TEXTURED + KINKED
4B hair typically has tighter bends and coils with less uniform definition. The pattern may appear more angular or compact, creating significant texture and natural volume.
