How to Make Your Hair Extensions Last Longer: 7 Care Tips from the Pros
Share
Hair extensions are an investment — and like any investment, how you maintain them determines how long they last. Whether you're rocking bundles, a frontal, or clip-ins, these tips will keep your hair looking fresh longer.
1. Wash Less Frequently
Unlike your natural hair, extensions don't benefit from your scalp's natural oils. Wash every 1–2 weeks using a sulfate-free shampoo to preserve moisture and prevent dryness.
2. Always Detangle Before Washing
Start from the ends and work your way up with a wide-tooth comb. Never detangle wet hair aggressively — this causes shedding.
3. Deep Condition Regularly
Raw and virgin hair thrives with moisture. Apply a deep conditioner every wash day and let it sit for at least 20–30 minutes.
4. Avoid Excessive Heat
Use a heat protectant every single time. Keep flat irons and curling wands under 380°F to prevent drying out the hair cuticle.
5. Sleep on Silk or Satin
Cotton pillowcases cause friction and frizz. A silk pillowcase or satin bonnet protects your extensions overnight.
6. Store Clip-Ins Properly
After removing clip-ins, brush them out, fold gently, and store in a silk bag or extension case. Never toss them loose in a drawer.
7. Minimize Product Buildup
Heavy oils and leave-ins can cause buildup that's hard to remove. Use lightweight products and clarify monthly.
